The statue of St. Caecilia in the church which bears her name, over the altar where her remains are, has a fascinating story. This statue reflects the image of Saint Caecilia when the tomb was re-opened in 1599 under Pope Clement VIII. It was sculpted by Stefano Maderno, who claimed to reproduce exactly what he saw when the coffin was opened.
If you look at the neck of the figure, you can see the cuts from the weapon of her martyrdom. She was killed during the persecutions around the year 230 AD, and the statue reflects how she was found - very subtle, but very dramatic at the same time.
