Curiosa Thursday: Statue of Giordano Bruno, Campo de’ Fiori

Updated: Jun 29

In the lively Campo de' Fiori of Rome there stands a grim statue with a hood pulled over his head and his stern eyes staring out across the city. You are looking at the statue of Giordano Bruno, and legend tells us that he is casting his eyes at the Vatican.

Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake in this spot in 1600 for the crime of heresy. The statue was erected in 1889 and this spot has become a gathering point for "free-thinkers". Despite the grim circumstances, the piazza is a wonderful place to visit. A market provides opportunity for fresh goods and there are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity.
