Curiosa Thursday: EUR - Mussolini's Rome

Updated: Nov 14

Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, EUR, Rome

Visiting the EUR district will take you outside of the center of Rome and away from the crowds to a virtually deserted area of the city. The region was planned by Mussol ini in the 1930s as a place to house the 1942 World's Fair, and display the contributions of Rome to the world. The acronym refers to this plan - Esposizione Universale Roma. The architecture reflects the period, and walking through the region you absolutely feel that you have stepped back in time. I last visited E.U.R. in the late 80s and was the only person around! Since then I have heard of attempts to reinvigorate the region and attract, for example, conferences.

But if you need to get away and immerse yourself in stark WWII architecture, there is no better place to do that than the EUR district in Rome.
